"Snipes Dene" Sponsored by
|
|
This dene runs from the tee down into the Gibside estate. On
the edge of the course the dene is spanned by an ancient
wagonway (an ancient monument). Below the infill, used to
build the fairway, are circles of large trees which experts say
are sites of ancient Bell pits. The trees were planted to warn of possible subsidence.

Looking at the fairway - 140 yards to reach it.
The fairway opens up to the left of the trees. |

The fairway is to the left of this photograph. |
Golfer's Tip
The 2nd new hole is a par 4 and a good solid drive is needed to leave
a medium iron into the green. The fairway is actually wider
than appears from the tee since it is partially hidden
by yet more mature trees. Big hitters need to be aware of the 'Out of
Bounds' at the left and the fairway actually narrows some 100 yards from the
flag. The green is on 2 levels and it is worth making a note of which level
the pin is on - have a look across to the right when you are walking
down the fairway on the previous hole !! There is only the one bunker
in front left of the green, but there is a grassy hollow area running
all round the rest of the green.
