HISTORY OF WHICKHAM GOLF CLUB
Whickham Golf Club was founded in 1911 and moved to its
present site at Hollinside Park in 1938.
This site was originally leased from the Earl of
Strathmore and was part of the Bowes-Lyon family estate.
The lodges at the Club entrance marked one of the main
entrances to the Gibside Estate. These buildings,
which are now used by the Club Professional as a shop
and workshop, are listed buildings of special architectural
and historic interest.
The existing Club House was completed in 1980 and provides
excellent facilities.
Recent developments have focussed on the course itself with
2 new holes being developed from year 2000 onwards. These are
now in play during the summer season. Buggies have also been
acquired to ensure that both visitors and members alike
can enjoy their golf in comfort.
Some commercial sponsorship has been obtained commencing in 2006 and this
has enabled us to deploy more signage on the course which will specifically
assist visitors. In addition the club has embraced the 'Internet revolution' with an
improved web facility for the benefit of members.
Season 2007 saw the introduction of some new competitions and the club competed well on all
fronts. The Men won the prestigous Clark Cup, and the Ladies won the Bronze
Thomlinson Trophy. Our HeadGreenkeeper Tony McLure attempted to qualify for the
Seniors tour in Portugal and came a very credible 23rd.
